The brief
What Kalaluha needed
Kalaluha needed a sponsor-first website for Music from the Valley, its original cultural IP built around Pandit Rahul Sharma and the santoor, well before public ticketing opened. The June 2026 developer brief asked for something closer to an interactive film than an event brochure: an entry into the valley, an aerial journey from Kashmir to ten tour cities, the santoor as the guiding symbol in place of a phoenix, a phone experience that holds up when sponsors open the link on WhatsApp, copy that is easy to edit and enquiry forms that work, with no unconfirmed partner logos on show.
The ideology
Emotion first, information second, commerce last: the valley and the santoor carry the page, and the case for patrons arrives only after the visitor has felt it.
Restraint over decoration
A night ground, hairline gold rules, a quiet film grain and one serif voice. Nothing competes with the photograph or the instrument.
The scroll is the camera
The opening film, the city route and the pinned scenes move only as fast as the visitor's hand, with a deliberate silent beat between river and santoor.
Sound by invitation
The page opens silent with a clear choice at the door: Enter with Sound or Enter in Silence. When sound is on, the score starts muffled and opens fully as the film descends.
Honest assets
The official poster and title lockup are used exactly as delivered, never retyped, and the opening film settles on a real photograph of the maestro.
One source for every word
Most of the copy lives in a single file, so cities, chapters and wording can change without touching the layout.

Project to delivery
How it came together
Brief
Kalaluha's June 2026 developer brief set the goal: a sponsor-first microsite that sells the scale and cultural value of the IP, built around a Kashmir-to-India map journey, the santoor in place of a phoenix, editable cities and an enquiry route, with public ticketing held for a later phase.
Prototype rounds
We tested the hero scrub, the d3 map and the sound engine in earlier Next.js 14 rounds. A creative director's review then fixed a new narrative order: a poster opening, a silent beat, a Kalaluha title card, global horizons and a closing finale.
Direction and assets
With the official poster, lockup and Kalaluha logo in hand, we cut the film masters into WebP frame sequences at 2304px for desktop and 1080px for phones, and closed the opening film on a real photograph of Pandit Rahul Sharma beside a Himalayan river.
Build
We built the final site in plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript with GSAP, Lenis and d3-geo: 15 chapters from poster to contact, a ten-city India route, a dark and gold world map for the international chapters, a patronage wall, a film vault and three enquiry forms.
Launch
We packaged the site for Hostinger shared hosting with no Node process, adding compression and cache rules and blocking private files from the web. It is live at musicfromthevalley.com.
Next chapters
The film slot and the listening links are already built into the page and need only the final video and platform links.

Under the hood
Development and technology
- Plain HTML, CSS and JavaScript (no framework, no build step)A single static page that runs on ordinary shared hosting and is simple to hand over and update
- GSAP 3.12.5 with ScrollTriggerPins the film, the maps and the other long scenes, and ties scroll position to the film frames, the map route and the text reveals
- Lenis 1.1.14 (vendored)Smooth, weighted scrolling driven by the GSAP ticker, switched off for reduced motion
- d3-geo 3.1.1 and d3-array 3.2.4 (vendored)Draws the India journey map (Mercator) and the world map for the international chapters (Natural Earth projection) from GeoJSON
- Canvas 2DPlays the scroll-scrubbed WebP frame sequences and paints the drifting mist and chinar-leaf atmosphere
- Web Audio APIRuns the optional score through a low-pass filter that opens as the film plays; an analyser lets the music's level move the light on the map and the waveform lines
- direction/copy.jsonOne copy file fetched at runtime, so cities and wording change without editing markup
- PHP enquiry endpoint (api/inquiry.php)Takes the three forms, filters bots with a honeypot, keeps a record of each submission and emails it to the team
- Google Fonts plus a self-hosted faceCormorant Garamond for display, Hanken Grotesk for body text, self-hosted Neulis Sans for the chapter menu and a few figure labels
- Hostinger shared hosting (LiteSpeed) with .htaccessServes the live site with compression, long caching for media and the private files blocked

Details worth a visit
A poster you step through
The official poster fills the screen and breathes slowly. Visitors choose Enter with Sound or Enter in Silence, a mist surge carries them into the valley, and the poster comes back as a bookend when they scroll back to the top.
An opening film driven by scroll
Three acts, 393 frames in all: a flight down the valley, the santoor assembling with a resonance ring on the first strike, the Kalaluha mark carved out of fire, then a real photograph of Pandit Rahul Sharma with the official lockup.
Ten cities, ten chapters
A route of light leaves Kashmir and reaches each city in turn on an India map drawn live on canvas. Each city has its own named chapter, from The Garden Chapter in Bengaluru to The Retreat Chapter in Goa.
The Atlas Plate
A dark and gold world map carries the story outward with a gilding sweep across five international chapters, from the GCC to North America.
Sound that opens with the valley
With sound on, the score starts muffled and opens to full presence as the film descends, and the music's own level moves the travelling light on the map.
Patronage wall and film vault
Twelve patron categories travel across a horizontal wall, each with its own line drawing. The Kashmiri Film Vault pairs open tiles with sealed ones and takes access requests through a form.
